New York City Taxi Facts
The current Ford Crown Victoria taxi uses 5,383 gallons of gasoline per year; whereas, a hybrid taxi uses approximately 1,794 gallons of gasoline per year.
If all NYC taxis were hybrids, over 46.5 million gallons of gasoline would be saved per year.
As mentioned in Bradley Tirpak and Dennis Tirpak's April 22, 2007 New York Times Op-Ed "How Green Is My Taxi", the current taxi fleet is made up of over 13,000 cabs (90% of which are Ford Crown Victorias that get 12-16 mpg because of city street driving) and the fleet traveled over 800 million miles.
What's more, the average New York taxi emits more than 100,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year - a leading contributor to climate change. The total fleet emits nearly 580,000 metric tons (639,340 U.S tons) per year.
